My scores for theater include the 1988 Tony Award winning Broadway production of M. BUTTERFLY. I have also written music for several plays by David Henry Hwang: THE HOUSE OF SLEEPING BEAUTIES, THE SOUND OF A VOICE, and FOB, which received Obie awards in 1980 and 1982. The productions were all performed at the New York Shakespeare Festival. WHO KILLED VINCENT CHIN, about a racial murder, for which I contributed music, received a 1989 Oscar nomination for Best Documentary. FORBIDDEN NIGHTS, which I scored for ABC TV, about the Tien An Mein massacre won the Asian American Pacific Artist Award in 1991. My music for SILVERLAKE LIFE: THE VIEW FROM HERE, dealt with the subject of AIDS, won Best Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival 1993. I also composed the score for TWILIGHT: LOS ANGELES,1992 created by Anna Deavere Smith about the L.A. riots. The East Coast premiere was at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, Fall 1993. Emily Mann directed another play that season for the McCarter Theatre, Joyce Carol Oates', THE PERFECTIONIST, for which I wrote a 12 tone fugue. The McCarter Theatre won the 1994 Tony Award for Best Regional Theatre.

 I have chosen to create scores for film, television, theater and concert stage which reflect social and political concerns of our society today. My scores which I have not included above are: HIROSHIMA (NBC), which depicts the stories of several survivors in Hiroshima after the dropping of the first atomic bomb in 1945.

 VIETNAM WAR STORY (HBO), is seen from the viewpoint of a young North Vietnamese boy fighting during the war. PAPER ANGELES (PBS/American Playhouse), follows the processing of immigrants entering the United States at Angel Island.

JENNIFER'S IN JAIL (LIFETIME), addresses the issue of girl gangs and street children in Los Angeles. LOTUS (American Film Institute), is an account of women's emancipation in China.

 DRUM SONG was written for the Boys Choir of Harlem with a libretto by George C. Wolfe.

THE UNWELCOME RHYTHM OF YOUR PULSE , commissioned and performed by the Womens Philharmonic of San Francisco, dealt with awakening sexuality. My other theater credits include IAGO which opened at Los Angeles's Inner City Cultural Center and Lincoln Center, THE BIG ONE SHOT was performed at Naked Angels Theatre in New York, SNAKE IN THE VEIN opened at the Blank Theatre Company in Los Angeles, VENUS VOODOO was performed in the Serious Fun Series at Lincoln Center. FIERCE ATTACHMENTS premiered at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Next Wave Festival. UTAH SUNRISE is commissioned by Ballet West in Salt Lake City.

I am also focusing on the cross-fertilization of Eastern and Western music and philosophies; leading to creation of a new form by consciously integrating the techniques and concepts of East and West. I have written music for movement meditation, ALI MacGRAW YOGA MIND & BODY. I am presently scoring a piece for MTV about Inspirational Women which is comprised of 12 segments on the lives of women such as Aung Sun Suu Kyi of Burma, Frida Kahlo of Mexico and Audrey Hepburn's work with UNICEF using global music techniques. My two albums, HOUSE OF SLEEPING BEAUTIES and SECRET LUMINESCENCE are on the Private Music label and are receiving international air play.
